Neva Michelle Burbach

Our sweet daughter Neva finally decided to join us in this world five days after her due date on Thursday September 3, 2009 after 34 hours of labor. My water broke at about 5:30 am on wednesday and the labor began. After laboring at home for 20 long, painful hours, we felt that it was time to go to the hospital to see how far I was dialated. I thought for sure I was transitioning and would be dialated to an 8 or 9. My mom and Tim also thought so because physically and emotionally I was showing signs of transition. But wow were we all wrong! I was only dialated to a 4! I wanted to die at that point. I felt so discouraged having labored for 20 hard hours and finding out I was only progressed that much. I really wanted to do this naturally. My midwife was beginning to be very concerned because the chance of infection increases the longer you go after your water breaks and I still had a long way to go before pushing. She felt that I needed pitocin to try and get me to progress more--another thing I absolutely did NOT want. But all I could think of was getting my daughter out of me safely and getting rid of the excruciating pain. I knew that my body wasn't strong enough at that point to be on pitocin after the previous 20 hours without the epidural. I also was only on 4 hours of sleep from the night before so you can imagine that I was extremely exhausted. I got the epidural and the pitocin and waited to see how fast I would progress. My midwife came in 3 hours later to check on me and I was only at a 5. After another 5 hours I was still at a 5!! So much for pitocin! This baby did NOT want to come! So they upped the pitocin a couple times throughout the next morning and finally at 12: 45 the next day it was time for me to push, but by that time I could tell that the epidural had almost completely worn off. I was DYING!! The contractions were so intense because they had me on the highest dose of pitocin. I seriously thought I was going to die! After about 2 long hours of pushing, my midwife was worried because Neva still wasn't where she wanted her to be. She thought that maybe her head was posterior so she called the doctor in to take over. The doctor ended up using the vacuum to get my poor little baby out. That was probably the worst pain I have ever gone through in my life! It was even worse than the hardest contractions I felt with the pitocin. It literally felt like someone took a torch to me down there for 30 minutes straight! Finally, her head came out along with the rest of her body and it was instant relief! The joy I felt when they laid her on me and I held her for the first time is impossible to explain. She is the most beautiful thing in this world! I love her so much and know that Tim and I are so blessed to have been entrusted with one of Heavenly Father's spirits.
